Prof. dr. Etienne Vermeersch
May 2, 1934 - January 18, 2019
Etienne Vermeersch was Professor of Philosophy and Bioethics at the University of Ghent, Belgium, which he formerly served as vice rector.
He became a renowned Belgian Moral philosopher as a founding father of the abortion and euthanasia laws in Belgium.
He served five years as a Jesuit (1953-1958). From 1959 he started his studies Philosophy while finishing his last two years Classical Philology at the University Ghent. He broke with his faith after his first year Philosophy and became an atheist and naturalist. During the 1990s Etienne Vermeersch became a huge influential Intellectual in Flanders, and as the chairman of the Belgian National Advisory Committee on Bioethics the leading Bioethicist in Belgium, years before euthanasia was legalized in 2002.
He was also one of the leading skeptics in The Low Countries.

1 september, en de volledig verwonderde-en lichtjes angstige- stemmen van de nieuwste lichting eerstestudiejaarders galmen over de schooklmuur mijn kamer in. Hier zijn nieuwe nieuwsgierigen die gretig zijn naar weten. Laten we ze te (w)eten geven en hun honger stillen.

Beste Etienne. Rust vooral zacht. Heb u helaas nooit mogen ontmoeten. Ik ben dankbaar dat ik uw zienswijze en denkbeelden wel heb mogen leren kennen. Heeft mijn leven verbeterd. Zo dankbaar voor.
Hoewel ik triest moet vaststellen dat de herinnering aan uw persoon alsook uw inzichten en scepticisme aan het vervagen is bij het gros van de bevolking, stijgt de relevantie van de door U met ons gedeelde visie met betrekking tot de overbevolkingsproblematiek exponentieel. Mocht U, hoe puur paradoxaal dit ook moge klinken gezien uw helder atheïsme , toch met uw bewustzijn in een hiernamaals zijn terechtgekomen....de mensheid kan een wake-up call gebruiken in eender welke vorm dat U dit toepasselijk ziet. Ik blijf alvast kritisch en rationeel verder doen en dank U voor uw enorme bijdrage hieraan.
Vier jaar dat Etienne Vermeersch deze Wereld verliet, Hij is er nog steeds.
Zijn uitspraak “ je moet me niet geloven,denk na” omvat Alles.
Ik zal mij prof. Vermeersch altijd herinneren als een van de grootste denkers van onze tijd. De inzichten die hij verschafte inzake godsdienst zullen mij altijd blijven intrigeren en verwonderen.
beste professor, jij kent mij niet maar ik kende en hoorde jou, alhoewel ikzelf niet alles begreep wat er uit jouw geest kwam verstond ik je wel, mochten er in deze wereld iets meer mensen rondlopen zoals jij dan stonden we met zijn allen al heel wat verder op deze planeet.

Je was een baken in tijden van verwarring. Jouw woorden zullen nog jaren een houvast blijven voor diegenen die willen begrijpen.
Ik vind jou een wijs man! Daarom blijf ik je na je dood volgen! Rust in vrede Etienne!

Beste Etienne, We missen uw zeer wijze, heldere en gegronde kijk op de vele verschillende aspecten van onze maatschappij en vrees dat we nooit nog iemand gaan meemaken die zo een sterke en oprechte toelichting rond een maatschappelijk probleem kan geven. Uw heengaan is een enorm verlies voor onze maatschappij en kijk nog regelmatig, weliswaar met weemoed, naar de opnames van de debatten waarop u aanwezig was en uw onverbeterlijke inbreng kon geven.
